Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Hither Green

Gardeners Hither Green is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening activities, including work in private gardens, communal outdoor areas and commercial green spaces within our service area.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

Our objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and guidance, and to promote a culture of safe working throughout all aspects of our gardening operations. Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Hither Green is responsible for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are provided for its effective operation. Management will:

Plan gardening work so it can be carried out safely, taking account of site conditions, weather, access and specific client requirements.

Provide and maintain safe equipment, tools and machinery appropriate for horticultural tasks, and ensure they are regularly inspected and serviced.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and regular subcontractors working on behalf of Gardeners Hither Green have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of those who may be affected by their work. They are required to:

Follow all safety instructions, training and procedures related to gardening activities, including the use of tools, machinery and chemicals.

Use personal protective equipment as instructed and report any defects or concerns immediately.

Inspect work areas on arrival, identify potential hazards such as uneven ground, overhanging branches, wildlife, sharps, or hidden obstructions, and report risks that cannot be controlled directly.

Operate machinery and equipment only if trained and authorised to do so, and never bypass guards or safety features.

Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that could impair safe performance.

Report all accidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions to management as soon as reasonably practicable.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Gardeners Hither Green will carry out risk assessments for routine and non-routine gardening tasks, including but not limited to grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree and shrub work, planting, soil cultivation, use of plant protection products, waste handling and work at height using ladders or access equipment. Control measures may include:

Selection of suitable tools and machinery for the size and nature of the garden or outdoor space.

Planning the sequence of work to keep pedestrians, residents and the public at a safe distance from active work areas.

Use of barriers, cones or signage where necessary to mark work zones and restricted areas.

Implementing manual handling techniques and mechanical aids to reduce strain from lifting, carrying and repetitive tasks.

Reviewing weather and ground conditions, and postponing work where conditions present an unacceptable risk, such as high winds for tree work or icy surfaces.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Substances

All gardening tools and powered equipment will be used in line with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety guidance. Gardeners Hither Green will ensure that:

Equipment is inspected regularly and defective items are removed from service until repaired or replaced.

Only competent and trained personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws where used.
